A statement on my art

A statement

Throughout my years of painting in classrooms I found myself being asked if I had a vision problem.  From tilted still life drawings, over saturation of color, and high contrasts I found myself unable to stop what came naturally to me.  I do have poor vision which I feel influences my need to exaggerate the colors I see.   With color as my primary focus, I also tend to gravitate towards a tactile approach  as well.  When creating an abstraction I add texture to better communicate shape and depth.   In recent works, I have been adding even more textural elements through sewing and bead work.
My abstractions start from observations of my local surroundings and personal experiences.   I take a place or an event and try to recreate it using color and texture to recreate the feeling of being in that moment.  A moment that will be seen differently through the eyes of each person who looks at it.  The small detail of the bead work and sewing elements help encourage the  the viewer to take a longer  look and connect these shapes to their own experiences.   I am interested in the experience of looking and how it effects everyone separately. My paintings start by looking around me and feeling a moment,  then they end with others looking at them and having a moment of their own.
